LaBadie, Jean de

LaBadie, Jean de
(1610–74)
   Mystic and Order Founder.
Labadie was born near Bordeaux, France. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest, but he later became a Protestant minister serving congregations in Geneva and the Netherlands. He formed a community in Middleburg based on holding everything in common and living a simple life. His principles were expounded in Anna Maria von Schurman’s book Eucleria. The community was forced to move from the Netherlands and it finally settled in Altona. Known as the Labadists, the group had died out by the middle of the eighteenth century.
